Rotational Doppler shift from a rotating rod

چکیده
This Letter reports on a rotational Doppler effect obtained from rotating rod illuminated by fundamental Gaussian laser beam. More specifically, we decompose the transmitted light behind into Laguerre–Gaussian modes and investigate associated frequency shifts. The main contributing correspond to having same symmetry as object. Furthermore, their shifts equal topological charge of beam times Potential applications in pattern recognition rotation identification are then considered.

Observation of the rotational Doppler shift of a white-light, orbital-angular-momentum- carrying beam backscattered from a rotating body
We observe the rotational Doppler shift of an orbital angular momentum (OAM)-carrying white-light beam after it is backscattered from a rotating object. Unlike the well known linear shift, this rotational shift is independent of the optical frequency, and hence each spectral component of the scattered light is shifted by the same value. Consequently, even a white-light source can give rise to a...
متن کاملOptical Doppler shift measurement using a rotating mirror
Optical Doppler shift demonstration experiments are not a simple task since the light source cannot usually be moved in a sufficiently smooth and uniform manner to keep the level of noise well below of that of the signal. For that reason most demonstration experiments are usually performed with sound or with microwaves. Previous works have been reported using a moving mirror in order to produce...
متن کاملAn acoustic spanner and its associated rotational Doppler shift
Light carries a spin angular momentum associated with its polarization and an orbital angular momentum arising from its phase cross-section. Sound, being a longitudinal wave, carries no spin component but can carry an orbital component of angular momentum when endowed with an appropriate phase structure. Here, we use a circular array of loudspeakers driven at a common angular frequency ωs but w...
متن کاملRotational Stability of a Diamagnetic Rod
When Faraday identified/named diamagnetism (relative permeability μ < 1) in 1845, he reported in Arts. 2253-2260 of [1] that a glass rod would align itself at right angles to the lines of magnetic field of his laboratory electromagnet. He also noted in Art. 2269 that such object moved “into the positions of weakest magnetic action.” Faraday’s test objects were suspended from a string, but W. Th...
متن کاملRotational Frequency Shift
The notion of the rotational frequency shift, an analog of the Doppler shift, is introduced. This new frequency shift occurs for atomic systems that lack rotational invariance, but have stationary states in a rotating frame. The rotational frequency shift is given by the scalar product of the angular velocity and the angular momentum of the emitted photon in full analogy with the standard Doppl...
